Another Christmas, Another War on It

Like many Americans, I grew up with many Christmas traditions: the tree, the Advent calender, decorations, and candy canes. While I am not particularly religious, these traditions still hold great meaning to me and I still think back fondly to Christmases past. However, there is a Christmas tradition I am not fond of. This is, not surprisingly, the yearly claim that there is a War on Christmas.
Listening to certain pundits, who are mainly denizens of Fox news, one would get the impression that those that celebrate Christmas have been forced to hide in ancient catacombs under the shopping malls to avoid being thrown into the arena where they would be cuddled by liberal, vegetarian lions of ambiguous gender.
On the face of it, to claim that there is a war on Christmas in America would seem to be prima facie evidence that a person is either joking, epistemically damaged or insane. After all, Christmas trees are displayed openly. People boldly wish others a merry Christmas and are not arrested. Christmas stockings are still hung from the chimney with care, rather than being hidden away in some secret corner. You can test this yourself: boldly go to a store that sells cards and ask for Christmas cards. Approach a police officer and ask her if you can report people for celebrating Christmas. Go to the mall and loudly proclaim that you are there to buy Christmas presents. Decorate your yard and your house for Christmas. Eat a candy cane in public. Then report in the comment section what happened.
The fact that Christianity does not get to be the official religion is not proof that there is a war on Christmas. The fact that non-Christians are not compelled to engage in Christmas activities is not proof there is a war on Christmas. The fact that religious tolerance and diversity is respected is not evidence there is a war on Christmas. The fact that some people do some ridiculous things regarding Christmas does not show that there is a war on Christmas.
As happens every year, the folks who (pretend to) believe in a war on Christmas point to problems involving Nativity scenes on state property. As I have written before, I rather like Nativity scenes: When I see one, however tacky it might be (one had flamingos lined up to adore the baby Jesus) I will pause and look at it, remembering days gone by. As such, I have nothing against Nativity scenes. However, I do agree that religious displays should not occur on state property.
Not having religious displays on state property (that is, the property of all the citizens) is not a war on Christmas. After all, not having the state actively endorse a specific faith is not an attack on that faith. If the state burned Nativity scenes as part of a public display, then that would be a war. Having a general ban on religious displays is not a war on religion but rather a refusal to exalt one faith above any others. That is an important part of allowing freedom of (and from) religion.
It is also important to note that manger scenes are not banned from anywhere else. If you want to turn your entire lawn into just such a scene, then you are free to do so. If your church wants to put up a massive manger extravaganza, they are free to do just that. And some do. If it is nearby, I will go see it. Even if it includes flamingos. Actually, especially if it includes flamingos.
Defenders in the imaginary war on Christmas also point to the use of “happy holidays” as a sign that Christmas is under attack. The obvious reply is that this is actually a holiday season. While Hanukkah is over, there are still holidays left such as Three King’s Day and New Year’s. The other obvious reply is that wishing people happy holidays when one does not know their faith (or lack thereof) is a sign of respect and inclusiveness.
I have no objection to someone wishing me a Merry Christmas or a Happy Hanukkah-I usually assume that the person is expressing good will towards me. I’m especially fine with it when the person is giving me a gift at the same time. But, honesty compels me to say that Christmas gifts generally put Hanukkah gifts to shame-not that I did not appreciate the dreidel and chocolate coins, Dave.
That said, I can see how people who are not Christians might find being relentlessly wished a Merry Christmas a bit off putting, especially if it is not done with the spirit of the season but issued as a challenge of faith. Fortunately, that does not happen all that often.
It has also been pointed out repeatedly that schools now have winter breaks rather than Christmas break. I do admit that even now it still sounds odd to be on winter break. I still use the term Christmas break because old habits die hard and, for me, I am on Christmas break. However, not everyone who attends state universities is a Christian and state universities are not supposed to endorse any specific faith (private religious schools are another matter). This is, however, not an attack on Christmas anymore than not calling it Kwanzaa break is an assault on Kwanzaa.
The self-styled protectors of Christmas also lament that Christ has been taken out of Christmas. However, it is not clear just how much Christ has been a part of Christmas. Much of the Christmas mythology and trappings are pagan in origin. Also, when you throw in the gross commercialization of the holiday, that would seem to have done a great deal to take the Christ out of Christmas.
While I would really like an Xbox One for Christmas, I’d also like the pundits to stop making up this war on Christmas. While it no doubt appeals to the base and creates that warm feeling of righteous indignation in some, it is completely contrary to the spirit of Christmas, namely peace on earth and goodwill to all. Ironically, it is the pundits that are waging a campaign against Christmas. So, ironically, I suppose they are right after all.
As a final point, if there is a war on Christmas, this is a war Christmas wins every year. Merry Christmas.

From Mike, I don’t find that odd. I find that rather business as usual. Now from a philosophical perspective, one lacking in bias and sophistry, I would find that quite odd. Of course it would then cease to be a philosophical perspective lacking bias and sophistry. Of course from my perspective, sophistry does not constitute a philosophy but rather a lack of one. YMMV.

Just read this passage again. Oh yes, the Left always wants passive enemies. Political correctness was created by Antonia Gramsci to make people passive, to destroy cultural hegemony. Peaceful, freedom-loving people will lose everything if they become too passive.

While antagonism and knee-jerk reaction to anything remotely religious in a public space appeals to the secularist base and creates that warm feeling of righteous intellectual superiority based on hypersensitivity, it is completely contrary to the generally espoused libertarian ethic of “live and let live”.

The historical Jesus was a semite, a Jew. As far as I know, Arabs and Jews are considered white. Let’s put it this way, he was more white than George Zimmerman whom the press had no trouble labeling as such despite his Afro-Peruvian grandmother. And Santa? Why should he be black? Should Uncle Remus be declared white? If you want you can go with the Three Wisemen, one of whom, Balthazar, in Spanish culture is black. Why ruin the holiday for the kids with this debate? Why try to ruin their joy and wonder? Why does even this issue need to be politicized? This, of course, all forms part of a broader war on the Judeo-Christian fundaments of our society. We don’t need to review all that but we all can hear that “dog whistle” loud and clear.
The war on happiness and joy, of course, goes well beyond the assault on Christmas traditions. The left cannot stand the thought of individuals doing things that bring them joy and happiness. Automobiles. Yes, automobiles form a major target of this assault. Driving an automobile can bring joy, excitement, and independence into a person’s life. Driving an “impractical” automobile such as a Porsche, a Corvette, a Nissan GTR, a Cadillac CTS-V, a Ferrari, or a 700Hp modified Shelby GT-500 is fun and brings joy. The leftists would have us all in grey buses, trains, and, at best, in subsidized pokey Priuses and Volts, stifling our joy and happiness in the name of protecting Gaia against a fake warming threat. They will use taxes, and EPA and safety regulations, and absurd speed limits to ruin our joy. The same with gun ownership. Guns are fun; they bring joy to the owner, and assert an individual’s right to independence and self-defense. Gun ownership, of course, also limits the power of the state, and the ability of the leftists running the state to dictate the arc of our lives. We see the same in the assault on drinking, smoking, eating meat, homeschooling, and on individual choice in medical care. The state will decide which schools our children can attend, what they will learn; the state will decide our medical choices. They wage war on small businesses, which bring joy to the owners and, again assert independence, because after all, “you didn’t build that.”
My favorite philosopher, William James, argued that “truth” is whatever makes you happy,
“No concrete test of what is really true has ever been agreed upon. . . . If a man chooses to turn his back altogether on God and the future, no one can prevent him; no one can show beyond reasonable doubt that he is mistaken. If a man thinks otherwise and acts as he thinks, I do not see that any one can prove that he is mistaken. Each must act as he thinks best; and if he is wrong, so much the worse for him. . . . In all important transactions of life we have to take a leap in the dark.”
Our lefty overlords cannot accept that. They will define happiness and truth and success. There will be no “leap in the dark.” At all times we must remember that our success and happiness come at the expense of someone else’s. You are well-off, only because somebody else is poorly-off. We must all live in fear of AIDS, SARS, Mad Cow Disease, Global Warming; all huddle together and let the state protect us.
Well, I will stop here before getting myself too worked up. In sum, it is best not to show that you are happy and joyful. The nannies will not like it, and whatever you’re doing to make yourself happy will get taxed, regulated, or banned. So, my advice for the season: wear a dour game face. Don’t let “them” know you are happy.</em?

I still say the war of Christmas is real. Mike doesn’t see it because he agrees with many of its aims.
Think to yourself, TJ, who is doing the most to damage what you consider the ideal state of our nation. Christians, or atheist leftists? You may believe that Christians engage in a chuckle-worthy myth, but I and no one I know, tries to use legislation to stop you from criticizing Christians. Can you say the same for the left?

Magus, I tend to be skeptical of anyone who wants to tell someone else how to think or what to believe. This applies equally to secular types like Al Gore. I think it is more appropriate to regard leftists and the like as having a different religion rather than being skeptics. Often the leftists are more dogmatic in their beliefs than religious people.
I actually think the most dangerous belief for a person to have is that one knows what is best for someone else. This defines a parent-child relationship, and is totally inappropriate between adults, or between the state and the citizen.
I’ve thought about why I am a libertarian, and part of it is that libertarianism, like conservatism and socialism, are not easily defined. My views on what works would be considered conservative: The classic American family structure (pre 1970s), works better than what is going on now. The stats on how children develop with two parents are unmistakable.
I am a libertarian in that I think that people ought to be free to make bad choices and that I do not think the government ought to incentivize those choices. Think of the incentives women have to demonize men and divorce. Essentially, the government has created a cycle of pernicious incentives, attempting to crush natural law. So, while I believe people should be able to do and believe what they will, nature should not be subjugated in the interest of bad behavior. In my own life I am conservative, and I believe that if the state did not incentize ill behavior, more people would be conservative in their own life. Freedom requires rules for personal behavior and those rules are ideally self-imposed.

Where I differ from conservatives:
1) Foreign policy. I think we fight far too many wars. The idea that fighting Al Qaeda requires a WWII level response is nuts. It is not our job to tell other countries how they should live.
2) Social policies. I think all sorts of family arrangements can work. I prefer the traditional model in my own life, but I don’t think it is my place to tell other people how to form their families.
1) Me, too. But you must realize that the reason we have that level of engagement is because we refuse to really fight. Those who do not feel the impacts of their bad decisions are the one’s that decide Soldiers and Marines should lay prostrate while they get shot at. Though can we admit that a little more help from Europe would go a long way? Europe is like feminists: They are protected by the system they complain about. And just as with feminism, I’m for removing our system of protection for say, two decades, until it’s realized that testosterone and power are good if properly focused.
2) If by “tell” you mean use the power of the state to force people, I’m with you. If by “tell” you mean reason with and advocate I’m not. Otherwise it’s similar to the arguments for multiculturalism, that nothing is really better than anything else. Which in my personal experience of 42 years, having lived with my grandparents, and baby-boomers, and having been a cop who routinely dealt with the children of single parents, I can tell you is simply not the case. I think nature would be enough to enforce a conservative outlook. Women would not want to divorce if they did not get lots of money and the children almost all the time. They would better appreciate men if the state did not protect them more than men. The Left routinely uses the State to force its views on people. Fair play no longer works if you have anti-authoritarian views.

As far as telling other countries how they should live, this is not a classically conservative attitude, more the neo-conservative thing, with a ton of liberal mantra thrown in. The problem is in foreign policy we have always done the same thing we do with domestic policy: Incentivized bad behavior. We give billions in aid to Pakistan. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, author of The Gulag Archipelago, complained that the US gave lots of money and air to the USSR under the pretenses of detente’. This only empowered the Communists and harmed people.
I am really only concerned with the coercive power of the state.
I don’t believe that all lifestyles or cultures equally good, but I also don’t believe there is anyone more qualified than me to decide what is in my best interest.
What is in our best interest has been massively contorted by the state. Even so, people would still do what is not in their best interest, but it would have far less impact on others.

Seems if there are Jewish criminals, they go to jail like most when they’re caught. Bernard Madoff for instance. On the whole I’d bet there are definitely less Jewish criminals per capita than most other demographs. The worst that could probably be said of them is that they stick together. It’s more like a censorship or political incorrectness of public acknowledgement or display, even to the point of a person wearing a crucifix in full view. Obviously the term “war” on Christmas is hyperbole. There is no shooting war on Christmas and Christians, which is, apparently, what you require for there to be a “War on Christmas”.

I remember, when I was a child, when it was against the law for a business to be open on Sundays. The Blue Law, it was called. Sunday being the Lord’s Day.
Fast forward 40-50 years and (virtually) the only well known business closed on Sundays is Chick-Fil-A, which was recently excoriated for supporting traditional marriage.
This excoriation, and this radical change over the past 40-50 years, is due to a hatred of Christ, his teachings, and those who follow him and his teachings. This hatred also manifests itself in a hatred of Christmas, the day we remember the birth of Christ.
Hatred of Christ and Christmas is theological, psychological, and sociological.

A Story about “evil jews.” My grandfather was antisemitic, I believe. He was from New York. It was not a part of his daily conversation or thinking, but I heard stories after he died. The stories were not told as criticism, but as celebrations, though the actual reasons that Jews should be disliked was never made clear to me.
Later after my grandfather died, a man whom my grandmother know, probably in his late 20s, began to help me and my grandmother out. I remember him being very kind. He bought me a toy on my birthday, a day even my father didn’t bother to care much about during that time( I lived with my grandmother during this time). He would say kind things to my grandmother all the time. The one he always repeated was: “You’ll live to be 100, Eva.” She’d laugh. She made it to 91. I remember my father coming around one day, and he said: You know, he’s a jew, right?” I could tell he wasn’t happy about it. My grandmother said she knew, but her tone indicated she didn’t much care.
Later, the man took me to his camp, as a way to help my grandmother and I out, since I had no men in my life. I think I was about 5 or 6 years old. I remember that we lay in our sleeping bags outdoors, looking at the stars. I don’t know why, but this was the first emerging of the religious mind that has been with me since that day. I asked him: “Brian, where is God?” He said, “Doug, God is everywhere.” Satisfied, I went to sleep.
